With holiday events and parties just around the corner it's time to look for the perfect little black dress. But, before you hit the shops there are just a few rules that you should keep in mind.

If you're going for sleeveless, unless your upper arms are in great shape, adding a jacket or two is a must.

A LBD topped with an interesting jacket will vary your outfit so that you can wear it to more than one party.

The ideal hemline is just at the knee.

If your legs are killer, sheer textured tights are chic.

Accessories are key. Make just one statement with a knockout necklace, belt, or clutch bag.

The September Issue

Now that summer is behind us and we have devoured all 584 pages of September Vogue, it's time for our fashion thoughts to turn to the spring/summer collections.

But, before closing the chapter on fall/winter fashion, let me just say, if you haven't seen the movie The September Issue. . . "Go."

The movie confirms that fashion is more than just fluff. In fact, fashion is a hard grueling business. And, with Editor in Chief Anna Wintour running the show the movie leaves little doubt (for those living under a rock who aren't already aware) that the entire fashion world revolves around her.

Though it's clear that Grace Coddington, Creative Director, is the talent behind Vogue's success, when it comes to the final word she, too, bows to the Chief. Grace's passion for her work is palpable. While struggling to hold onto her vision of beauty she's acutely aware that the times have changed in the twenty years since she first started working at Vogue (the same day as Anna Wintour), With profit the bottom line, we see Grace constantly grappling with compromise; soft romantic shots lose to clear crisp Photoshopped images. Yet she holds her ground with Anna. As Anna points out in the film after so many years she and Grace have an understanding. There are times when Anna gives way to Grace. For instance, when while editing a shot of a model and camera man jumping (Grace's spontaneous idea) Anna, after suggesting that the camera guy hit the gym, orders his ever so slightly bulged abs to get Photoshopped trim. "Not everyone looks like a model," Grace said with a slight roll of her eyes once Anna has left the room.

When it comes to actors gracing the covers of Vogue Grace, while looking back on a time when the fashion world had its own model-celebrities, acknowledges the impact that Hollywood celebrities have on the clothes women wear.

After years of religiously reading the magazine we finally get a chance to go inside Vogue to see how it all comes together. Do not miss this movie if you give a hoot about fashion!

Fall/Winter 2009

While the look this season is vibrant color, shimmer, skyscraper heels, and stiletto boots, according to Vogue 1942 has also made an appearance with shoulder pads, peplums, and subtle off hues such as faded orange, putty and mustard. Cafe-society black, shorter skirts, and high-rolled hair is the look for evening.

Where Oh Where Have All The Chic Ladies Gone?

It's been a while since we've connected and I do apologize for staying away for so long.

In my search for fifty-something Chic On The Street ladies I didn't fail. However, as you see, nary a one appears on this page. Although they're out there strutting their chic selves on the sidewalks of Portland I was met with a firm hand when mentioning my mission. Rather than feeling proud of their years these fashion conscious gals flat out refused to go public with any age that begins with a five.

Now, I have to admit that until recently I stood side-by-side linking arms with my fellow pentagenarian females. That is, until one day it it struck me. Who was I if not the sum of my years? More importantly, who was I kidding and why did I care what anyone thought? Like, what? - after fifty-seven years of life I should feel shame? Who says that a woman never tells her age? Two grown sons, a four-year-old grandson and two-year-old granddaughter I have earned the stripes of of my years, dammit.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting that we, of a certain age (did I really just write that?) stop trying to make the most of what we still have. When it comes to strutting Chic On The Street, now, more than ever overall image is everything. Therefore, dear readers, it is my hope that this posting serve as a reminder of just how fabulous we really are.

With an eye for fashion, our style is our own. Since body types vary not every woman can sport, for example, hipster jeans or, say, plunging necklines. We say, if you got it highlight it using a low beam light. In our opinion skin-tight hipster jeans (or anything skin-tight) is simply a no-no at our age. As are mini-skirts, hot-pants and any neckline that plunges close to the navel. Despite a stunning-hit-the-gym-five-times-a week-body we know that the time has come to cover it up.
We shimmer from within therefore there's no need for rocking- fashion- glitter. Sequins are a thing of the past, unless worn sparingly as trim on a sweater, blouse, or dress - we won't even consider flaunting a single sequin on pants, skirts, or below the waistline on a dress. Accessories are where we shine; necklaces, earrings, bracelets, shoe clips, belts and handbags.
We don't wear our daughter's clothes, though they are dying to wear ours. We may be fashionistas but we are no fashion victims. Our closets are filled with a collection of timeless clothes that over the years we've carefully chosen. Since we understand the value of good craftsmanship, cut and fabric, we don't mind laying down dollars for pieces that we know will withstand the test of time. Conversely, our younger counterpart's closets are collections of what's-in-at-the-moment, purchased at prices that reflect the coming and going of teenage fashion.
We know how to mix bargains pieces with higher-priced quality pieces for a look that doesn't come across as contrived. A Gap T worn with a favorite Armani skirt and Prada flats, for instance, or a Banana Republic crisp summer dress paired with a Gucci patent leather belt and bargain strappy flat sandals are fresh pulled together looks that will never go out of style. Over the years we've collected quality pieces and the day has come when before going out shopping we first go to our closets, and then maybe a quick trip to stores such as The Gap, Nordstrom Rack, or Banana Republic to finish the look.
We believe that shoes make an outfit. We don't skimp on dollars when purchasing shoes unless, of course, it's a pair of strappy sandals, espadrilles, or ballet flats that we intend to wear with our jeans, capris, or long bohemian skirt when off to the market or to brunch on the weekends.
When buying handbags we don't go on the cheap. Granted the price of handbags are out of control. $1,500.00 upwards can make a gal faint flat on the floor. Since we're not designer junkies, - labels don't boost our self-esteem - we never go there. Instead we buy wonderfully crafted, quality bags for much less, given the caveat we're gonna have to open our wallets a little. However, by shopping sales and visiting consignment boutiques we know we can shop on a budget and still have a quality bag. We steer clear of fashion magazine In Bags knowing that when the season is done, so are they. More importantly, they scream fashion victim (victim to a marketing ploy) which we are not.
Wearing minimum makeup gives us a look that's youthful and fresh. Less is best. The matt look is aging; we wear foundation, powder, and lipstick that leave a dewy finish. Neutrals on eyes look the best on us.

Now go out there and show your true self. Break a few rules if you must. After all that's why we have them.

First thing tomorrow I will be hitting the streets of Portland looking for urban chic fifty-somethings. I can barely wait. A fifty-something myself, this is a topic that has been percolating in my brain for a while.

Art Mixes With Fashion At Radish Underground

Hood River designer Jennifer Thomas and artist Leif Ilvedson share a love for fashion. After all, fashion is art, and there's no better way to prove it than by making a painting of a mysterious lady wearing a fabulous dress.

Jennifer's designs are not only chic, but comfortable. Made with soft washable materials, her creations blur the line between elegance and street fashion chic. This dress will look fabulous with either jewels and strappy sandals or a denim jacket and boots.

Solacial Rains, on display at Radish Underground, is artist, Leif Ilvedson's interpretation of Jennifer's dress. Looking into the paining we wonder, who is the lady under the umbrella outside in the rain? Where is she going? Where has she been?

The atmosphere inside is warm and cozy. And super chic owner, Celestial and Gina are as laid-back and friendly as it gets when it comes to welcoming guests to the store.

On the street — Portland guys and gals who, when it comes to fashion, think for themselves.

Mihja, Nordstrom's Nars Cosmetic Specialist, has chic bohemian style down cold. When it comes to accessorizing Mihja knows that a great metallic bag (Dolce & Gabbana), head scarf, and metallic sandals will turn her basic T and skinny jeans into a head-turning outfit.

Anise has a creative style that mirrors her work as an artist.

Interior Designer, Tate, takes to the streets with casual style. Fitted zipper cardigan paired with loose fitting cotton pants and sneakers give Tate the kind of sophisticated urban look seen on the streets of most major cities.

Khathy, Moule Sales Associate, has a casual chic style. Her wide hip-slung belt and metallic sandals dress up her look allowing her to head straight from work to a night on the town.

Anna's style is sophisticated glamour. The fabuloso gold studded bag adds a bold anchor to her look .

And, isn't that what fashion is all about, expressing the person within with a clear image of who we are on the exterior?
